The Corgi Juniors range evolved from the Mettoy Playcraft ‘Husky’ range introduced in 1964. These were sold exclusively in Woolworth’s stores, but following the end of this agreement in 1969, the range was renamed ‘Corgi Juniors’ and became available from all Corgi retail outlets. In 1970 the decision was taken to fit the entire range with low friction ‘WhizzWheels’ in order to compete with the Matchbox Superfast and Mattel Hotwheels products.
The models were originally intended to run at high speed on the ‘Corgi Rockets’ track sets, similar to those available in the Hotwheels range, but a successful legal challenge by Mattel led to these being withdrawn from production in 1972.
